Deployments...One Month Down

At this point it was still very, very painful to have my best friend gone every day. I would find myself still waiting for him to come walking through the door, like he was just down the road on post. It's a strange feeling. I think once you've known someone for so long (we're about to celebrate 24 years of marriage this month) it's impossible not to feel a void when they're not around.

Looking back I don't recall what all happened the first month, but I remember him arriving at Kandahar and soon experiencing the death of Soldiers. It wasn't Soldiers from our Post, but he still prayed over a few men that had been killed, and participated in their Ramp Ceremony. He asked me to watch for reports of their deaths and write down their names in my journal. Month one was just a peak of what was to come...

Hi Laura,

My name is Amy. I don't remember exactly how I stumbled across your blog...but I know it was in a search for blogs of wives of chaplains and well, your blog title must have somehow led me directly here. :)

This coming summer I'm marrying my best friend, who is becoming an Army Chaplain himself. I did the blog search back when we were dating, in my attempts to get glimpses into this life. He's currently in the Mass National Guard as a Chaplain Candidate, which is also where he currently plans to stay.

We're both in seminary now, which is also were we met, so once he has his MDiv, he'll be full-fledged and get his cross.

Anyway...I don't want to make this comment forever long, but I wanted to just step out there and introduce myself. I've found your blog to be encouraging (I hope you don't mind I've read some of it). I never-ever expected to marry someone in the military...I was actually strong against it (primarily for deployment reasons), but here I am and I can't imagine it any other way. I know that it's going to be quite difficult at times (it's something we talked about to great extent before we even started to really date), but I know God's grace is sufficient for us both and I have absolutely no doubt that this is my fiance's calling.

Lastly, I really like what you're doing with talking about what the deployment was like for you. I know I don't know you and you don't know me...but I was wondering if you would be willing to exchange an email or two about your experience. I understand if you don't; I won't be offended.

I really appreciate your perspective, especially as the wife of a Chaplain who evidently loves and trusts the Lord.

Blessings,
Amy
